El Caminito del Rey gets awarded by the Civil Engineers Association

The prize ‘Town and Territory’ awards 'the refurbishment of a historic path, part of a hydraulic and hydroelectric power project of great importance for cultural heritage.'Cristóbal Ortega underlines that the above project became an example of a respectful use of historically important constructions as well as the surroundings.

The Caminito del Rey Project receives a new award which is to be added to many others related to the refurbishment of this natural beauty spot. This time, the 3rd National ‘Town and Territory Albert Serratosa’ Award is going to be received in Madrid this very afternoon by the Civil Engineers Association and the Caminos Foundation.

The award was received by the County Council representative for Environment, Inland Tourism and Climate Change Cristóbal Ortega and architect Luis Machuca, who designed the refurbishment project and was in charge of the team of the County Council Architecture Services, responsible for the restoration of the old path, who performed the works on it together with the representatives of Sando Company.

The Civil Engineers Association and the Caminos Foundation has awarded the Caminito del Rey Project with a special prize in the field of local projects considering the great importance that 'the refurbishment and improvement of an historic path, part of a hydraulic and hydroelectric power project of great importance for cultural heritage' have for engineering.

Regarding this, Cristóbal Ortega said that the path's refurbishment had shown that the cultural heritage conservation was a great wealth apart from being a responsibility of the past and future generations. It was also underlined that this project had become an example of a respectful use of historically important constructions as well as the environmental values of the surroundings.

Mr Ortega emphasized that this prize is one of many given to the project, such as the Europa Nostra Award, which is the most significant prize given by the EU for the cultural heritage, as well as awards at the 13th Spanish Architecture and Town Planning Biennial, the 10th Hispanic-American Architecture Biennial, and the Architecture Award at the ArchMarathon in Milan. Moreover, the Spanish cabinet awarded the path with the prize for emerging tourist destination and the Regional Government with the Premio Andalucía del Turismo (the Andalusian Award for Contribution to Tourism Sector) in 2016.

In addition, the County Council representative for Environment, Inland Tourism and Climate Change has explained that the new challenge is to include the high boardwalks and its surroundings with all its extraordinary rich cultural heritage on the UNESCO's World Heritage List. There are already 17,500 supporters of this proposal, and the fact that the project counts on the support of the Civil Engineers Association and the Caminos Foundation is of great help for the above challenge.

Furthermore, the refurbishment of a historical urban complex in Cartagena and the projects carried out in the Sevillian eco-distric Cerro-Amate, in Móstoles and in Madrid are also going to be granted the 3rd National ‘Town and Territory Albert Serratosa’ Award for local projects. As for the awards in the field of a large-scale projects, the awarded parts will be Madrid Río built on the sunken M-30 ring road, the improvements of the landscape and surroundings on the left shore of the Odiel sea inlet in Huelva, the zone 1 of the Granada Underground, the water management and environmental planning in the case of the Guadiana River in Badajoz, and Ca n'Alemany in Viladecans in Barcelona.
