Sevilliana Endesa company is to colaborate with the Málaga County Council in decorative lighting of the path – El Caminito del Rey

The electric power company and the government of the province are to design artistic lighting of the new boardwalk and the surrounding area of the gorge – El Desfiladero de los Gaitanes in order to make it more attractive for tourists.

The exhibition called ‘Illuminated Heritage’ with 64 photos can be seen in the County Council headquarters until 31st August.

The County Council of Málaga and the Sevillian Company Endesa are going to collaborate in decorative lighting of El Caminito del Rey, a tourist and environmental infrastructure which is being rebuilt and prepared for its official opening at the beginning of 2015. Today, Elîas Bendodo, the County Council president, and the company’s president Antonio Pascual have agreed to work together on artistic lighting of the new boardwalk and the suroundings of El Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. This initiative aims to increase the tourist value of the spot.

This agreement was achieved at a meeting in the County Council’s headquarters before the official opening of the exhibition called ‘Illuminated Heritage’. Francisco Arteaga, general manager of Endesa in Andalucîa and Extremadura attended the meeting. We were informed that the first technical works on this project design are to be performed in September.

More than 20% of the works on rebuilding of El Caminito del Rey has been done until now and they should be finished before the end of the year, although the opening is planned for the first quarter of 2015. The Málaga County Council financed the whole project, which is awarded to Sando, a building company from Málaga. The cost of the project is 2.3 m euros.

Mr Bendodo has welcomed this agreement and pointed out that ‘he will give more importance to this project which is meant to rescue a piece of the history of the province’, and will improve economic activity of the Guadalhorce Valley. Moreover, King Felipe VI was invited to come to the opening in honour of his great-great-grandfather who walked along this way in 1921.

Illuminated Heritage of the County Council

Mr Bendodo pointed out that Sevilliana Endesa company is highly experienced in decorative lighting of historic and artistic heritage. In fact, the exhibition which has been opened today is going to last until 31st August. Sixty-five artistically illuminated photos of monuments from Andalusia and Extremadura, such as Málaga’s Cathedral or La Concepción Gardens, are shown.

The visitor is going to be able to enjoy photos of monuments that represent art history of the period that spans Mudejar’s, Gothic, baroque, or neoclassical buildings, as well as 20th - century constructions which are esthetically improved by lighting.

Plenty of data about history and artistic features of the lightened monuments can be consulted, as well as digital images that can be downloaded through QR code. Monuments from Málaga City and the province that can be seen are: The Cathedral and La Concepción Gardens, the patio that belongs to Holy Week Brotherhoods Headquarters, Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Church (Sacred Heart of Jesus Church), El Tajo from Ronda (Ronda’s Cliff), Nuestra Seńora de la Encarnación (Our Lady of the Incarnation) Church in Álora, the church at Santo Domingo (St Dominic) Convent in Ronda, or Antequera’s Citadel (Spanish: alcazaba).

The exhibition, which has already visited Seville and Granada, will be visiting the rest of Andalusian provinces and Badajoz from September 2014 to February 2015.
